California Department of Industrial Relations and Cal/OSHA Will Honor Workers’ Memorial Day at Four Events in California on April 28th-29th 2024. Cal/OSHA Joining Partners in Arcadia, Richmond, San Diego and San Francisco.
By Lonce Lamonte, editor, using the news release from the California DIR - April 25, 2024

Workers’ Memorial Day is an international day of remembrance held annually on April 28, the date the Occupational Safety and Health Act was enacted in 1971 to help protect the right of workers to a safe and healthful workplace.

WHY IT MATTERS: In 2022, 5,486 workers across the U.S. lost their lives due to workplace hazards. In California, 504 workers suffered fatal and serious illnesses and injuries. (The leading causes of death were transportation incidents and exposure to harmful substances, which includes unintentional drug overdose deaths.)

Cal/OSHA is at the forefront in adopting regulations to prevent injury and illness, including Heat Illness Prevention, COVID-19 Prevention, Wildfire Smoke Protections, and emergency standards on respirable crystalline silica.

California Division of Workers' Compensation Launches Online Portal for Submission of QME Medical-Legal Reports
By Lonce Lamonte, editor, with the news release from the California DWC Newsline - April 23, 2024

The Division of Workers’ Compensation (DWC) has launched a new online portal for Qualified Medical Evaluators (QMEs) to submit medical-legal reports as required by recently approved regulations (Title 8CCR §50(g)) regarding the QME reappointment process. QMEs are now required to submit their two most recent medical-legal reports in which there was a face-to-face evaluation and the injured worker was determined to have reached the status of maximum medical improvement. If the QME did not generate two such reports in the two years prior to their reappointment date, they may submit a statement of explanation in lieu of the reports.

California Division of Workers’ Compensation Posts Updated Time of Hire Notice
By Lonce Lamonte, editor, with the news release from the California DWC Newsline - April 22, 2024

The California Division of Workers’ Compensation (DWC) has posted an updated time of hire notice on its website. The time of hire notice was previously referred to as the time of hire pamphlet.

The notice, which is posted in English and Spanish versions, meets the requirements under Labor Code section 3551 to notify new employees about California workers’ compensation rights and benefits either at the time of hire or by the end of the first pay period. The time of hire notice was created in 2011 to help employers and claims administrators ensure that employees know what to do in case of workplace injury.
