| | Jake Jacobsmeyer, veteran workers’ compensation claims defense attorney who began as an applicants’ attorney, has now joined the law firm of Michael Sullivan & Associates. By Lonce Lamonte - May 28, 2024
Jake Jacobsmeyer, a veteran California workers’ compensation defense attorney, just last week, perhaps it was Friday, joined the law firm of Michael Sullivan & Associates.
Jake was first an applicants’ attorney for just less than 20 years, and then became a defense attorney and has been one for over 20 years. Thus, combined together, he has over forty years of experience. Most of that time he has worked and resided in the San Francisco East Bay.
He most recently was a partner in his own firm of Shaw, Jacobsmeyer, Crain & Claffey. It was called Shaw, Jacobsmeyer, Crain, Claffey, and Nix when this writer first met Jake in the Summer of 2009 on the Wharf in San Francisco.
I met him at Scoma’s on a pier that jutted out into the water. The occasion was a Memorial honoring Dick Milam, who was a career claims manager. Jake had done legal defense work for Dick when Jake was with the firm of Laughlin, Falbo, Levy & Moresi.
Jake also worked for Adelson, Testan and Brundo after Laughlin, Falbo, Levy & Moresi. Then, he put together his own firm as a partner.
I’ve always called him Jake, and had no idea until yesterday that his formal first name is actually Richard. So, he’s Richard Jacobsmeyer.
I had no clue, as everybody calls him Jake. It’s not hard to figure out that the Jake nickname comes from his last name of Jacobsmeyer.
The sun was out on that pleasantly cool day of August 15th 2009 at Scoma’s at Pier 47. Jake with there with his wife, Cyndy Larsen, a registered nurse who was then the Vice President of Regional Sales for CorVel. Jake talked about fine wines and demonstrated that he’s pretty knowledgeable as he partook of the delectable hors d’oeuvres being served just like everybody else. He showed himself to be cultured, cultivated, and handsome.
Jake is a Certified Specialist in Workers’ Compensation law. When he was an applicants’ attorney, he served on the Board of Governors of the California Applicants’ Attorneys Association in various capacities. As a defense attorney he has represented employers, insurance carriers, and third-party administrators in all areas involving workers’ compensation claims before the W.C.A.B. He has also performed appellate work, audit representation, and claims consulting.
Jake has been Co-Editor in Chief of the California Workers’ Compensation Handbook since 2010. He serves on the Lexis Board of Editorial Consultants. He has been a frequent presenter for multiple organizations on workers’ compensation topics and issues. Some have been the California Applicants’ Attorneys Association, the Division of Workers’ Compensation, the California Orthopedic Association, the Conference of Workers’ Compensation Judges, and the California Society of Industrial Medicine and Surgery.
Jake was awarded Comp Laude National Defense Attorney of the Year in 2018. He was designated Work Comp Executive Magazine’s Most Influential People in Workers’ Compensation in 2010.
Michael Sullivan & Associates has expressed that Jake will be participating in their multiple educational programs, including webinars and training programs. The firm expects Jake’s extensive knowledge and proven expertise to significantly augment Michael Sullivan & Associates’ ability to navigate complex cases and achieve favorable outcomes for clients.
