Police And Firefighters Report Fewer On-The-Job Injuries By Associated Press - October 16, 2005
LOS ANGELES (AP) _ Police officers and firefighters are reporting fewer on-the-job injuries.
Last year, police officers filed 3,096 workers' compensation claims --a 27 percent drop from five years ago. Firefighters and workers in other city agencies also had fewer claims.
"Claims are down, costs are down, the amount of time that people are injured and off duty is down, and productive work is up," said Tom Coultas, assistant general manager of the city's Personnel Department.
Overall, there was a 13 percent citywide decline in workers' compensation claims last year for an unexpected $36 million windfall to city coffers.
The reason for the big drop in Police Department claims wasn't clear. Some credit a younger or more careful police force, department efforts to root out fraud or the benefits of exercise.
Injuries are a big problem in the LAPD, the city's largest department. Nearly one out of three officers files a worker's compensation claim each year.
