| | We’re Almost There! A California Work Comp Agreement Is Close, According To Schwarzenegger By John Franklin - March 31, 2004Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger wants it by week’s end. And he says it’s going to happen, in spite of another Republican, Assembly Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy of Bakersfield saying he didn’t think a Workers’ Compensation agreement was that close.
"I do not see what I see on the table right now as something that is an agreement," McCarthy told reporters after an Assembly floor debate on the issue.
But Schwarzenegger is quoted as saying, "I see it, I feel it, I taste it."
He also went on to say that the negotiations, including last Sunday’s session, have been very intense, and that: "We have always moved it forward. There were set-backs. Then we moved it forward again. I think on Sunday we made really good progress, so it looks really good and everyone seems to be upbeat. Sometimes it’s difficult for people to say I didn’t quite get everything I wanted but that’s just the way it is. We have to be grown-ups about it and move forward."
Schwarzenegger wants to finalize an agreement before lawmakers go on vacation for a week this Friday. Backers of the ballot initiative have until mid-April to submit signatures that would put a compensation reform measure on the November ballot.
"It’s there in front of me," Schwarzenegger said. "I will not allow anyone to just stop and to break up and say, "I will not talk to you for a week. So, that will never happen." |
