A Couple of Real Winners
By Robert Warne - October 9, 2003

A couple shacked up in Grass Valley that embarked on their own work comp version of Catch Me If You Can, found out the hard way that their forgery skills fell considerably short of Frank Abagnale’s.

The two shacked up lovers, Jack Herrera, 25 and Cristalle Salas-Gilbert, 23 concocted a plan to bankroll their Sierra foothills lifestyle by creating a counterfeit work comp policy and use it to farm a crop of claims.

The policy they created was for a company called Credit Care. Salas-Gilbert was the owner and Herrera was her employee.

But after filing their first claim for Herrera, investigators knew something wasn’t right because Herrera was on house arrest at the time and could only leave the house with the permission from his probation officer.

Then further investigation revealed that Credit Care was truly a fictitious business name and the company didn’t exist.

The pair surrendered to authorities on Sept. 12 and appeared for arraignment in a Nevada County Superior Court.  The Nevada County District Attorney's Office is prosecuting the case.
