| | Of Microfiche and Claims By Robert Warne - October 6, 2003 Santa Cruz’s Chief Librarian, Anne Turner is concerned that the city’s library system is being fogged in by a $700,000 deficit, part of which, is a result of its employees filing claims like they’re just checking out books.
Who would have ever though that a library was a dangerous place to work.
But beyond the turnstile, lurking amongst the books, periodicals, microfiche and maps are unforeseen workplace dangers that have sent even the most diligent of librarians home with a work comp claim.
In the last six years, 76 Santa Cruz library employees have filed claims. These claims account for a total $376,000. Last year though the library system set a record with 17 claims that cost the city over $100,000, according to the Santa Cruz Sentinel.
On the front lines, the checkout desk accounts for 2/3 of the library’s claims. Repetitive stress and lifting injuries come with the territory.
Turner believes the latest checkout equipment could curb clams, but there’s no money in the budget for it.
So for now, in the interim, the city has contracted with an ergonomic consultant and a chiropractor to change the work culture, a proactive solution that some may say, was long overdue.
