San Diego DA’s Trophy Catch By Robert Warne - May 22, 2003
The San Diego District Attorney this week unleashed a legal wrecking ball on the owners of a string of Southern California construction companies for underreporting their payroll and other fraudulent activities.
Angel Leon and James Miller learned their fate, May 20, for burning the state by keeping more than $15 million in gross income between 1997-2000 off the books.
State Fund, which also participated in the investigation, as a result of the judgment stands to recover $920,000 from the men. And on Tuesday, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune, the men cut their first check to State Fund for $250,000.
Along with five years of probation, the men will also be required to spend 2004 in a cage and complete 300 hours of volunteer work.
Facing other charges for legal infractions committed through their four companies, the men opted for a plea bargain and only pled guilty to income and tax evasion and workers’ compensation premium fraud.
