| | Juries Are Awarding More Money, More Often in Liability Cases By Michelle Logsdon - May 7, 2002A recent study reports personal-injury plaintiffs received, on average, 26 percent more money from juries in 2000. According to Jury Verdict Research, the national median jury award rose from approximately $39,000 in 1999 to $50,000 in 2000.
“Juries looked favorably on plaintiffs, according to our statistics,” said David Boxold, managing editor of the study. “However, it’s important to note that while some plaintiffs win million-dollar awards, most receive far less – as evidenced by the 2000 median of $50,000.”
The 2001 edition of the report, Current Award Trends in Personal Injury, showed the median award in the products liability category jumping from $1.6 million in 1999 to $1.8 million in 2000. The most common injury claim in this category was death, followed by asbestos-related illness.
In the premises liability category, owners and operators of industry property paid the highest awards at a median amount of $280,300. |
