| | Insurance Commissioner Won't Run for Post By Robert Warne - September 20, 2001With the 2002 election looming in the near distance, it has been reported that Harry Low won’t be campaigning to retain his position as insurance commissioner.
Following the announcement made to his staff Sept. 19, the LA Times reports Low said he wants to devote his energies to rebuilding the department during his remaining 15 months in office.
Appointed by Gov. Gray Davis, Low became California’s 37th insurance commissioner Sept. 18, 2000. As a retired judge, Low came out of retirement to fill the position following the forced resignation of Chuck Quackenbush.
Prior to becoming California’s insurance commissioner, Low’s legal career of over 30 years included serving as a presiding state appellate court justice and also as a commissioner of the workers’ compensation appeals board among other positions.
With Low out of the race, four candidates remain. The following are the candidates:
- Tom Calderon
(D) - State Assemblyman & Ex-Montebello School Board President
- John Garamendi
(D) - Ex-Insurance Commissioner, Ex-State Sen. & '94 Governor Candidate
- Tom Umberg
