Juneteenth is a holiday celebrated on June 19th to commemorate the emancipation of enslaved people in the US. The holiday was first celebrated in Texas, where on that date in 1865, in the aftermath of the Civil War, enslaved people were declared free under the terms of the 1862 Emancipation Proclamation.
It marks the day when the last enslaved people in the United States learned they were free.
President Joe Biden signed legislation on June 17, 2021, making Juneteenth a U.S. federal holiday after Congress passed The Juneteenth National Independence Day Act that same month.
In 1945, Juneteenth was introduced in San Francisco by a migrant from Texas, Wesley Johnson. During the 1950s and 1960s, the Civil Rights Movement focused the attention of African Americans on expanding freedom and integrating.
Some famous quotes for Juneteenth are: “Knowledge makes a man unfit to be a slave.” “You can’t separate peace from freedom.” “My humanity is bound up in yours, for we can only be human together.” “Slavery is theft, theft of a life.” “There are still many causes worth sacrificing for, so much history yet to be made.”
It is typical to wish people a “Happy Juneteenth”. The easiest way to wish someone a Happy Juneteenth is by messaging them and wishing them a fulfilled day. Similar to Black History Month, and other important anniversaries to Black Americans, it is important to acknowledge it as an American holiday.
