Darrell Brown, Sedgwick So Cal Claims Executive, Dies At Age 52. His Memorial To Be Held on November 30th 2019 In Inglewood, California

Darrell Brown was a superstar claims executive at Sedgwick Claims Management Services. I remember when he was hired by the company in 2001 in Southern California and started as the assistant claims manager in the Sedgwick Orange office.
Darrell died two weeks ago on Saturday, November 9th 2019, of an apparent heart attack while at his home in the Inglewood area. He was only 52 years of age; he was born on July 11, 1967.
This writer was shocked by the news of his death. Stunned. He was so vibrant and alive that day I saw him at the LA Athletic Club during the time of the RIMS Conference in downtown Los Angeles in 2013. He was so serious and professional in his manner and bearing. He was handsome and perfectly dressed. That was so Darrell.
Darrell had bounced to and from a couple claims departments in a short time before he was hired at his consummate professional home at Sedgwick. I wrote in my eight-page paper newsletter of that time of the turn of the century that Darrell landed at Sedgwick “like a thrown cat”. Darrell then wrote to me and asked what I meant by like a thrown cat. I wrote back and told him I meant he landed well on his feet.
Indeed. Darrell was always well on his feet.
Darrell Brown was promoted from assistant claims manager to claims manager in Orange within a short time. Then, he was transferred to the Sedgwick Long Beach office where he continued to be promoted to levels of vice-president. He oversaw the entire Southern California workers’ compensation claims operation. That consisted of over 400 people.
He was educated at Palisades Charter High School in Pacific Palisades and at Cal State University Northridge. In 2013, he was made Chief Performance Officer and continued to work out of the Sedgwick Long Beach office. Darrell became an integral part of and an innovator in Sedgwick’s Performance 360 process.
In April 2013, Los Angeles hosted the RIMS Conference at the downtown LA Convention Center. Darrell expressed at the time that he’d been doubtful about LA as the appropriate host city. But then he wound up being impressed and changed his mind. He celebrated well at the Sedgwick Wrap Party at Studio One on April 24th 2013.
In 2015, Darrell was promoted to Executive Vice President and became Sedgwick’s highest ranking claims executive. The accolades on his executive prowess continued to pour forth. He was written about in an article in Property Casualty 360 magazine on October 23rd 2018. He was honored as the ACE (America’s Claims Executive) Claims Luminary of the Year.
President of Sedgwick, Dave North, wrote in an email to this writer, “There are few people in our industry who capture your heart and mind and leave you wanting more. Darrell was one of them. Any encounter with Darrell left you feeling like you just met one of the good guys. He had the vision and compassion we all aspire to. His inspiration will be his legacy.”
Darrell had his certificate with SIP (Self-Insurance-Plans) with the state of California, and the designation of Associate of Risk Management. He had served earlier in his career as an instructor for IEA (Insurance Educational Association) and taught courses on workers’ compensation case law.
Darrell’s death is a tragedy for the claims industry, for Sedgwick, and for his family, colleagues, and friends. He was a claims executive of prodigious talent, character, and class. His loss is immeasurable.
