Imagine all the goodies that could be found on a California Department of Workers’ Compensation computer or even one from State Fund.

A computer recently purchased at a government auction in Pennsylvania came loaded with workers’ compensation data and social security numbers.

The state is still trying to investigate how many computers it sold that could potentially still have classified information left on the hard drives.

Samantha Elliott a spokeswoman for the Pennsylvania Department of General Services (DGS) said they halted the computer sales once a local television station made them aware of the problem. She said it is a general policy that each department is in charge of clearing its hard drives before they are sold.

It is estimated that the government sold up to 2,500 hard drives once used by state employees.

Chris Dixon the reporter for WHTM-TV who contacted the DGS said the two computers he bought contained worker identification numbers and employment histories.

Information on the drives Dixon bought was recovered by using free software downloaded from the Internet specifically designed to restore deleted files.

The state admits its ability to track down the computers is limited.
