| | An Ankle Injury, High Heels, A Tryst, And An Arrest By Jorge Alexandria - July 16, 2012
Just about everyone has twisted an ankle at one time or another inasmuch as ankle sprains are the most common athletic injury. Due to the stress of weight bearing on the joint, some doctors choose to prescribe crutches and advise their patients to avoid any activity that causes further pain.
Such good advice fell on the deaf ears of Modupe Adunni Martin, a 28-year-old custodian at Sequoia Union High School District (in the San Francisco Bay area) who was on Temporary Total Disability (TTD) for a left ankle work injury, but was captured on video ditching her crutches at a public park and then running on high-heel shoes toward her waiting boyfriend. While at the park, Martin, forgoing normal therapeutic conditioning activities such as riding a stationary bicycle, using a rowing machine, or swimming with leg floats, was instead seen on her knees in front of her sitting boyfriend performing sex. Martin was arrested in August 2009 and charged with 10 counts of insurance fraud by the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office. She entered a plea of not-guilty. She is currently free on a $40,000 bail and her trial is set for October 22, 2012.
Investigators say Martin was acting suspicious, so they started using hidden cameras to keep an eye on her. One day after an otherwise uneventful doctor’s appointment, Martin walked to her car and tossed the crutches into the back seat. She then drove to a nearby gas station where she changed into high heels and went into a public park close by. Martin met up with her boyfriend for her now infamous romantic rendezvous. Her treating doctor has since indicated that the activities she engaged in on that fateful day could not be done with an injured ankle. However, I don’t know if you need an ankle to do that; I mean what type of sexual activity can't possibly be performed with a bad ankle?
Perhaps she even had masochistic tendencies. Her biggest mistake prosecutors said is being recorded walking into the doctor’s office with crutches, but walking out of the office without them. Martin claimed she couldn’t work or walk without pain, and used crutches on 10 visits to the doctor to gain workers’ compensation, thus the 10 charge indictment.
One can’t help but wonder if Martin had a handicapped parking placard too.
