In California, workers’ compensation claims filed by professionals and clerical employees are the most costly to employers according to a report by the California Workers’ Compensation Institute (CWCI).
The report summarized findings from a CWCI review of 2.1 million workers’ compensation claims filed between 1993 and 2000. Professional and clerical workers comprised 350,000 of those claims.
The cost for indemnity and medical payments for professional and clerical claims in 1997 averaged $8,657 one year after the injury and $21,762 two years after the injury. For all industries, the averages that same year were $8,365 one year after injury and $20,247 two years after the injury.
According to the study, the higher costs could be attributed to several factors: the higher number of cumulative injuries in professional and clerical jobs such as carpal tunnel syndrome and mental stress; claims that live approximately one month longer than claims for all industries; and the higher number of lawsuits in these cases.
