Nurses Settle Yearlong Strike
By John Millrany - March 16, 2001

At a cost of $7.7 million, a nurses strike was settled March 15 at two St. John’s hospitals in Ventura County. Thus ended a bitter yearlong battle, highlighted by insurance issues and punctuated by several short-term strikes by nurses at St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Oxnard and Pleasant Valley Hospital in Camarillo.

The deal, which works out to about $14,800 added costs per nurse over the next four years, was consummated after 85% of the nursing staff voted yes. A stipulation in the settlement requires that all 520 St. John’s nurses carry a union card. The contract supports a 4% annual raise, freezes the premium rate nurses have to pay for medical insurance and also establishes a patient care committee consisting of nurses and management that will resolve issues when nurses feel that they are unsafely handling too many patients at a given time.

St. John’s management, part of the nonprofit parent company Catholic Healthcare West, did not return phone calls to adjustercom.com, while Dave Bullock, president of Service Employees International Union Local 399, said, "I don’t see any reason to make a public comment."
