| | Ready for the Self-Insurance Administrator's Exam? By Robert Warne - March 5, 2001Planning on taking California’s Self-Insurance Administrator’s Exam this year? If you are, now is the time to prepare. One way to prepare would be to wing it on your own. Another way would be to take a professional preparation class. Test Right offers one such course—earning the recognition as "the only course recommended by the California Self-Insurers Association."
adjustercom.com contacted Jim Moriarty, the founder and instructor for the Test Right Prep Course. adjustercom.com was curious as to why Moriarty’s popular course has a success rate on average of 80% and that he’s willing to guarantee a pass on the exam or the next course is free.
Moriarty attributes the success of his course to comprehensive instruction accompanied with in-depth study materials necessary to pass. Study material includes a reference manual, study guide and practice tests. Plus it doesn’t detract from the course that Moriarty himself has taken and passed the exam 8 times. And it does help that he is a trial lawyer, lecturer, author and Certified Self-Insurance Administrator with over 25 years experience reserving, rating, adjusting, investigating, defending, auditing, and managing Workers’ Compensation claims.
The Spring 2001 dates and locations are as follows:
Norwalk, May 1-2
Pasadena/Glendale, May 3-4
Sacramento, May 7-8
San Francisco, May 9-10

The test is offered twice a year and is administered by the California Department of Industrial Relations.
Stated in The California Code of Regulations, Title 8, Section 15452, "Any persons may demonstrate individual competence as an administrator for a self-administered self insurer or an agency administered self insurance program by successfully passing the written examination designed to test technical knowledge of Workers’ Compensation law and claims administration."
Also, "Each adjusting location of a third party administrative agency or a self-administered self insurer shall have at least one person who has passed the self insurance administrator’s examination. All Workers’ Compensation self insurance claims at such reporting location shall be administered and adjusted under the direct supervision of a person who has passed the self-insurance administrator’s examination. Supervision of claims decisions, setting of estimates of future liability of claims, and proper payments of benefits to injured workers shall be made or reviewed by a person who has passed the self-insurance administrator’s examination."
