| | Richard Zaks, Defense Attorney, Dies After A Long Illness. Memorial Services July 6th. By Lonce LaMon - July 4, 2009Richard Zaks, a well known workers' compensation defense attorney in Southern California, died on Thursday, July 2nd 2009, after a long illness.
Zaks was most recently a partner of Zaks & Barnard, with offices at 500 N. Brand Boulevard, in Glendale, California. Formerly, in the 1990s, he had been a partner with Don Gabriel in Gabriel & Zaks, and the two had an office in the penthouse of 600 N. Central Avenue in Glendale, California.
"He had a pool table in that office," Ray Garcia, a retired hearing representative, stated today when reminiscing about Richard Zaks and the "good old days" when claims adjusters would go play pool in Zaks' office up in that penthouse.
"He was a fighter in court," Garcia continued. "He was a very bright guy, that's all I can tell you."
After Gabriel & Zaks, Richard Zaks had a law firm called Gabriel, Zaks & Horielli. Then, he transitioned into his last and existing firm of Zaks & Barnard.
"He handled some very big cases from Fremont," Ray Garcia remembered about the old days at Fremont Indemnity Company, which went into liquidation and bankruptcy in 2002. "Fremont sent him some big cases."
Zaks went to Whittier Law School in Whittier, California. He was admitted to the California Bar in 1977.
Memorial Services will be held on Monday, July 6, 2009 at 2:00 PM at Mt. Sinai in the Hollywood Hills, 6300 Forest Lawn Drive, Los Angeles, CA 90068
