Man Arrested After Abandoning Killing Plot By Associated Press - February 27, 2006REDWOOD CITY, Calif. (AP) _ A San Mateo man who abandoned his plan to kill state workers because of disability claim problems was arrested with a loaded gun hours after he peacefully left a workers' compensation office, police said.
James Lowell Hazen, 42, was arrested in his car Feb. 16 after leaving the California Division of Workers' Compensation office in Oakland, San Mateo County prosecutor Sheryl Wolcott said Wednesday.
Hazen's roommate tipped off authorities that Hazen plotted to use a 9 mm handgun to kill workers or take hostages to draw attention to flaws in the workers' compensation system, Wolcott said.
Hazen told police he decided not to carry out the plan after talking with workers' comp employees about his case.
Hazen, who has a prior conviction for gun possession, pleaded not guilty Tuesday in San Mateo County Superior Court to charges including being a felon in possession of a loaded gun and commercial burglary for entering the Oakland building with the intent to commit a crime, prosecutors said.
Hazen, who faces six years in prison if convicted, was being held in San Mateo County jail in lieu of $1 million bail.
A preliminary hearing was scheduled for March 6. |
