| | Six Arrested In Insurance Fraud Scheme By Juliana Barbassa, Associated Press Writer - December 13, 2005FRESNO, Calif. (AP) _ Six suspects were arrested Tuesday in an alleged insurance scheme involving chiropractors and lawyers who sought payments for fraudulent car crash claims and solicited participants to pose as victims, said state Insurance Commissioner John Garamendi.
The arrests followed a two-year investigation that began when several large insurance carriers, including GEICO and Liberty Mutual Insurance, reported a large volume of suspicious claims dating back to 1998, Garamendi said.
Undercover officers posed as car crash victims and were prescribed excessive treatments, and offered money to recruit others by Fresno chiropractor John Aguilar Jr., Garamendi said.
The undercover officers were also referred to attorney Ngoan Van Dao, 69, of Westminster, where unlicensed employees acted as lawyers and filed fake claims, he said.
Garamendi could not say how much the scam cost insurers.
Van Dao and Aguilar, who owns Twin Valley Clinic in Fresno and others in Sacramento and Merced, were held Tuesday in the Fresno County jail.
Also arrested were chiropractor Juan S. DeLaVara, 35, of Riverbank, and Ngia Thao, 24, Scott F. Saephanh, 41, and Toua Thomas Vang, 37, all of Merced.
The suspects face charges including insurance fraud, conspiracy to commit insurance fraud, grand theft and conspiracy to practice law without a license. |
