Under The Hood Also Under The Table By Associated Press - November 28, 2005
SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (AP) _ Three auto shops were fined for allegedly paying workers under the table and not having workers' compensation, according to the district attorney's office.
The fines stemmed from a one-day operation on Nov. 9, which resulted from tips, said district attorney Inspector Steve Fitzgerald.
Monterey Auto Body in Pajaro was fined $9,500, Edge Motor Sports in Santa Cruz $2,750 and The Chop Shop in Watsonville $1,500, according to the district attorney's office.
Sean Covington, owner of The Chop Shop, said he has no employees but that a friend was there doing work on his own car when the investigators showed up. He said he was considering appealing.
