| | Transportation Spending Underway By Associated Press - May 12, 2005FRESNO, Calif. (AP) _ While visiting Fresno to announce his plans for transportation spending, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger was confronted by hundreds of protesters who said his reform package hurts workers.
Schwarzenegger stood on a nearly completed stretch of Freeway 180 when he announced he would restore nearly $1.3 billion in transportation funds to his proposed state budget. The additional money could mean the freeway could be completed this year, rather than three years from now, he said.
"It's time for California to build again," Schwarzenegger said.
The appreciative welcome given the governor by spectators at the official event, however, was followed by jeering. A crowd of teachers, nurses, firefighters, police officers, corrections officers and home health workers gathered outside a private home where Schwarzenegger held a fund-raiser to protest his government reform measures.
"He's attacked our pension and workers' compensation and benefits," said Mike Gill, a member of the Fresno City Fire Department. |
