| | The Loud-Tie Mouthpiece...He's Baaaacckk By John Millrany - June 8, 2001It’s not really about Johnnie Cochran…yet there he is, the "Dream Team" mouthpiece with the Prozac-power tie who has been called into the fray of a lawsuit filed by Tina Lee-Vogt, sister of Anthony Dwain Lee, who was gunned down by a LAPD cop at a controversial Halloween party in Beverly Hills last year.
The wrongful death suit seeks damages sought against LAPD to the tune of $100 million.
Claiming that Lee was shot in the back, Cochran declared at a news conference June 5, "This shooting should have never happened."
Lee-Vogt, claiming a police cover-up conspiracy, said her brother "was not a fleeing felon. He was not a parolee at large. He was not a suspect with an outstanding warrant."
The shooting happened when Officers Tarriel Hopper and Natalie Humphreys responded to a noise complaint at the Benedict Canyon mansion. LAPD authorities said Hopper fired into a room after he shined a flashlight onto Lee, who pointed a gun at the officer.
At a subsequent news conference, Police Chief Barnard Parks pointed out that the gun was a replica of a .357-caliber magnum and that Hopper fired in fear of his life. Four of the nine shots struck the 39-year-old actor.
Cochran, however, strongly disputed Parks’ explanation, saying, "The physical evidence puts a lie to that. (Lee) was shot in the back."
As LAPD continues its internal investigation, Hooper and Humpheys have been relegated to administrative duties. |
