| | $7 Million Verdict Goes to Northridge Quake Victims By John Millrany - June 18, 2001After a monthlong trial, a Los Angeles Superior Court jury awarded a $7 million verdict June 15 on behalf of 430 Culver City families who live in a 3-story complex damaged by the 1994 Northridge Earthquake.
The action was the first to be resolved since the state extended the deadline until Dec. 31 to file claims pertaining to the 6.8-magnitude quake, the most costly in American history.
Residents of the 10-acre Tara Hills community, who had lost an earlier claim against their insurer, were paying a $29,000 annual premium to Scottsdale Insurance. They claimed widespread cracks across their buildings signaled danger should another large quake occur. However, the claim was rejected by Scottsdale.
Unhappy with the turndown, the families filed for an extension, employing the services of Brian Kabateck’s law firm. Kabateck was one of the authors of the extended deadline law—an outgrowth of the claims scandal which blew up in the face of former California Department of Insurance Commissioner Chuck Quackenbush.
The jury deliberated for three days. The money will go for repairs at the complex. |
