Atascadero School District Hopes To Reduce Workers' Compensation Costs By $1 Million By The Associated Press - May 25, 2004ATASCADERO, Calif. (AP) - The school district hopes to reduce workers compensation costs by $1 million over the next five years.
The Atascadero Unified School District board voted Tuesday to create a new administrative position - director of special projects at a salary of $84,661 a year - as early as July.
The district scrubbed its original reorganization proposal that included increasing the work calendar for the superintendent, assistant superintendent and director of human resources by 20 days, adding $8,000 to $10,000 a year to their salaries.
Those administrators would have used the extra days to focus on how they can lower the cost of workers compensation and special education.
"That's not on the table anymore because of the perception out there that it's a built-in raise," Superintendent Jim Stecher said. "I'm not going to ask for it."
To pay for the new director of special projects, the district will eliminate the curriculum director and summer school principal positions. The Atascadero Junior High School principal's work schedule will also be reduced by five days.
The new administrator will look for ways to lower the district's workers compensation costs by establishing safety programs and helping employees recover and return to work more quickly.
