| | Tentative Work Comp Deal Reached In California! Schwarzenegger heads for Hawaii By John Franklin - April 5, 2004Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and The California Legislature struck a tentative deal on Friday late in the day and then headed for well deserved vacations. Schwarzenegger took off for Hawaii for eight days, the first vacation of any length he's had since last Christmas.
The deal is "pretty well cooked" said Senate President Pro Temp John L. Burton (D-San Francisco) who has spent hours with Schwarzenegger in negotiations of late. But officials stopped short of embracing a final deal since many aspects of the plan still need to be refined.
Staff members are working this week to draft what is expected to be a 1,000 page bill meant to revamp the entire California Workers' Compensation Insurance system. The out-of-control costs of the current system are blamed for chasing businesses out of California.
Differences have not yet been ironed out to the point where Schwarzenegger is ready to abandon his effort to gather enough signatures to put a Work Comp overhaul on the November ballot. Even on Friday night, aides were urging people to sign the petitions in case a legistative solution fell through.
The current hope is to have the voluminous legislation drafted by April 8th, in time for lawmakers to review it over the weekend. If all goes smoothly, public hearings could be held April 12th, clearing the way for the legislation to be voted on by the Senate and the Assembly shortly thereafter. |
