Clifford Strachan will be ringing in the New Year on a sour note as he prepares for his Jan. 20 arraignment in Humboldt County Superior Court for six felony counts of workers’ compensation fraud.
The charges are in connection with the 53-year-old Eureka resident’s exaggeration of a workplace injury that yielded him an extra $9,000.
The former Easter Seals employee allegedly told doctors that he couldn’t even hold onto a plate with his left hand after he injured his shoulder in 2001, while carrying wooden planks, according to the Eureka Times-Standard.
The complaint also alleges that Strachan misrepresented his injury to a State Fund adjuster handling his claim.
Humboldt County District Attorney Paul Gallegos’ words regarding workers’ compensation fraud are anything but consoling for Strachan. According to the Time-Standard, Gallegos said, it was his office’s intent to pursue all fraudulent attempts to gain work comp benefits at the felony level because of the widespread social damage caused by such actions.
