The Los Angeles County controller’s office was forced to act fast recently after it checked its list of 1,949 workers’ compensation claimants and realized that it had processed their paychecks twice, Dec. 12.
The windfall of the duplicate checks must have been too irresistible for some claimants who were able to translate the checks into cash before the controller’s office could stop payments on the checks.
Los Angeles County Auditor-Controller Tyler McCauley said that his office sent out a letter to all the claimants informing them that the checks were a mistake and not a Christmas bonus, according to the Daily News.
McCaulery said that he’s hopeful those who already cashed their checks will return the money after receiving the letter.
He is working with county workers’ compensation officials to recover any overpayments and to reimburse any returned check fees, the Daily News reported.
