San Simeon Quake Opens Up a New Fault of Claims By Robert Warne - December 23, 2003
As the initial reports of potential claims pour in, it looks as though Paso Robles absorbed the brunt of the 6.5 magnitude San Simeon earthquake Dec. 22.
Some business structures in the downtown area collapsed and parked cars were buried. So far it has been reported that two people lost their lives as a result of the natural disaster.
Others were injured when they were struck by falling barrels at a nearby winery.
According to NBC, a spokesman for the San Luis Obispo sheriff’s department said the Twin Cities Community Hospital in Templeton reported treating 20 to 30 patients for minor quake-related injuries.
Insurance Commissioner John Garamendi didn’t hesitate to release a statement regarding the temblor.
"I offer my deepest sympathy to the families of the victims in today's earthquake, and I pray for the safety of everyone else within the radius of damage. My Department stands ready to provide assistance on all insurance matters that may arise.
"For those who live in earthquake danger zones but do not have earthquake insurance, you may want to consider purchasing a policy. Also, it is of utmost importance that you make every effort to retrofit your home and its contents to minimize the danger to you and your property in future earthquakes.”
