Work comp pioneer Fred Drexler died Dec. 7 of the infirmities of old age at 88.
Founder of the California Workers’ Compensation Institute in 1964 and named Insurance Man of the Year in Los Angeles in 1971 and the following year in San Francisco, Drexler was a work comp authority.
Three different insurance commissioners appointed him to head industry advisory committees.
He was vice chairman of the California Insurance Guarantee Association, served twice as chairman of the then California Compensation Insurance Rating Bureau, and as president of the Pacific Insurance and Surety Conference in 1967-68.
Crum and Forster acquired Industrial Indemnity Co. in 1968 while Drexler was serving as its chairman. Following the transition, Drexler served as a director of Crum and Forster for 15 years.
A graduate of the University of Redlands, Drexler also earned a law degree from Golden Gate University in San Francisco. While his contributions to the insurance industry are unrivaled his professional accomplishments outside the industry are equally impressive.
