| | Dept. of Insurance Seeks Committee Volunteers By John Millrany - June 12, 2001California’s Department of Insurance is looking to fill 23 committee appointments to the Producer Licensing Bureau’s Agents and Brokers Advisory Committee (ABAC) and Curriculum Board (CB).
Deadline to apply for the volunteer positions is June 30.
ABAC advises the DOI commissioner (Harry Low) on a variety of issues and concerns pertaining to more than 250,000 state licensed agents and brokers, including matters from licensing to professional standards, and from enforcement to market conduct.
Not mandated by statute, ABAB was formed by the commissioner in 1995. The commissioner and staff review submissions to determine the applicant’s experience and education, with particular regard to complementing the knowledge and expertise of members currently serving.
After appointment by the commissioner, members serve two years, meet quarterly and are reimbursed for travel expenses. There are presently 19 vacancies on the committee.
Pursuant to the California Insurance Code, the Curriculum Board oversees the development of prelicensing and continuing education curriculum for agents and brokers, including a list of pre-approved courses of study and courses of study for professional designations. The board also develops standards for providers and instructors for prelicensing and continuing education courses, programs and seminars.
The commissioner appoints the members, who consist of representatives of insurance agents, brokers and life agents’ trade associations and representatives of insurance companies and consumer groups. The term is for three years and members meet quarterly. There are presently four vacancies.
Applications must be submitted to the DOI’s Producer Licensing Bureau, 320 Capitol Mall, Sacramento, CA 95814. Further information is available by contacting Charlene Ferguson at http://www.FergusonC@insurance.ca.gov or calling 800-967-9331 or 916-492-3042. |
