| | Garamendi Eager to Comp Arnold a Lunch By Robert Warne - October 13, 2003 With the realization that the Gray cloud over Sacramento was about to lift and he’d soon be sitting across a table with Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, discussing work comp reform, Insurance Commissioner John Garamendi cordially congratulated the Terminator on his successful campaign, Oct. 8.
Garamendi told the governor-elect that he looked forward to working with him to confront the multiple insurance issues looming over the state.
He did plug the recent work comp reform bills, but acknowledged that it was only the first step, and that step two needs to be addressed immediately.
The commissioner also told Schwarzenegger that, “Obviously, it is critically important to have your leadership and direct involvement in drafting and passing the legislation necessary to accomplish the second phase of overall system reform. I would, therefore, like to meet with you to discuss our current direction as soon as possible during your transition.”
Schwarzenegger has promised to pass a jobs package with real work comp reform within his first 100 days in office and said he will call a special session with the Legislature to fix the state’s work comp system if needed.
With Gov. Gray Davis, Garamendi knew what to expect, but with Schwarzenegger heading to the capitol, its hard to say if he’ll pick up where the Legislature has left off or catch everyone off guard by pulling some radical reforms out of the bag.
