A Shockingly Legitimate Shaky Claim By Robert Warne - September 2, 2003 The byproduct of the wacky weather news that’s been reported across the nation this summer has been stories of wacky claims.
Many of the stories deal with massive property damage claims, but once in a while there’s a workers’ compensation story that can be pretty shocking.
Take for instance Dave Wysong, a tow truck driver for Allen County Towing in Indiana.
According to Indiana’s The News-Sentinel, on Aug. 26, Wysong was dispatched to a stretch of Interstate 69 to retrieve a stalled Porche.
Wysong secured the vehicle and was in the process of attaching a safety chain from the car to the bottom of the truck when lightning struck.
The bolt nailed a Wells Fargo sign about 25 yards from where Wysong was working, and the surge from the bolt struck him.
Wysong is alive today because the chain he was holding at the time the bolt stuck was touching the truck and allowed the voltage to pass though the chain to the truck.
The surge knocked him out and left him with his arm twitching. But aside from feeling shakey, Wysong was released from the hospital that night and spent the following day getting his work comp paperwork for his claim in order.
