Sable Not Up to the Task of Survivability By Robert Warne - May 11, 2001
Sable Insurance Co. is the latest to be voted off the island in California’s Workers’ Compensation survival series. Tainted by its parent company’s financial woes, a recent financial examination found Sable insolvent by more than $12.9 million.
This examination prompted the Superior Court of San Francisco to issue the conservation order. Insurance Commissioner Harry Low announced May 10 that the Department of Conservation and Liquidation was given the go ahead to take over Sable Insurance Co.
Sable Insurance Co. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Sable Insurance Holding Co., headquartered in San Francisco. The parent of Sable Insurance Holding Co. is cash-strapped Reliance National Indemnity Co.
Currently under supervision in Pennsylvania and on the brink of bankruptcy, Reliance owes "significant amounts of money," according to a spokesman for Low. He also said that it is unlikely Sable would ever recover money owed.
Sable Insurance underwrote WC and commercial lines in California and 14 other states. Sable had been operating in run-off mode and not accepting new business since January.
