Nabbed by the Skin of a Claim By Robert Warne - June 30, 2003 As a result of depression, chronic fatigue syndrome, back problems, neurological problems, and irritable bowel syndrome, Pairlee Wanda Roland quit her job as a Legislative Assistant for the California Legislative Assembly Rules Committee.
Six months later, in June 2001, Roland put in her application for long-term disability benefits.
She stated in the application that she hadn’t been working nor was involved in any form of self-employment since her leave from the Assembly.
But after some investigation, California Department of Insurance (CDI) investigators found out that she was anything but laid up at home popping Prozac and staying close to the bathroom.
In a May 2003 CDI interview, Roland admitted that she had been running her own business, Skin’sations, since March 2001, where she worked as a massage therapist and esthetician.
Roland said she wasn’t up front with officials in 2001 because she didn’t want the fact that she owned a business to influence whether she would get disability benefits or not.
The CDI announced June 27 that Roland had recently surrendered to authorities at the Sacramento County Jail for three counts of insurance fraud.
