A man who claimed he spent most of last December in bed whimpering because of a mysterious unwitnessed back injury was arrested Dec. 19 because 33 hours of sub rosa video footage told a different story.

Between December 2001 and February 2002 the Workers’ Compensation Department of the Fresno Unified School District obtained footage of 27-year-old Richard Sharrah doing everything but whimpering. The tapes which could be sold as this year’s workout craze video has Sharrah demonstrating activities such as walking, sitting, squatting, bending, standing and lifting items while engaged in selling NFL football memorabilia. If there was any pain or discomfort experienced by Sharrah when making the tape, he hid it well from investigators.

Red flags started to pop up when Sharrah’s treatment was complete and he continued to resist his physician’s request that he return back to work. He claimed his symptoms grew more intense and he was experiencing acute pain.

When deposed in March 2002 he told a school district attorney he didn’t have any outside income, he was in constant pain and couldn’t lift anything, bend or stand for more than 15 minutes or walk without a limp.

Booked into the Fresno County Jail with bail set at $20,000, the only way Sharrah can now avoid four felony counts of insurance fraud is if he can back up his back claim before the judge.
