| | Bike Broker Dominates in the Tour de Recall By Robert Warne - July 11, 2002With the Tour de France underway, many bicycle enthusiasts await to see if Lance Armstrong will pull off his fourth consecutive victory after overcoming testicular cancer. On another front in the world of bikes, Dynacraft Industries Inc. has been setting records with product liability suits in the Tour de Recall.
Currently the San Rafael bicycle importer is recalling Vertical XL2 mountain bikes it sold at Target stores nationwide from August 1999 to March 2000. The forks are defective and at least six cases that include cuts and broken teeth have been reported to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.
Consumers are urged by the Product Safety Commission stop using these bicycles immediately and contact Dynacraft Industries for information on receiving a free replacement fork and free installation.
Dynacraft distributes bikes through Wal-Mart, Target, Toys R Us, Kmart and KayBee Toys. Other bikes that have been recalled in the past few years have been sold under the Magna label as well.
In the last 11 years the company has recalled about 300,000 bikes in 11 product recalls. Problems with wheels and pedals falling off have prompted ten of the recalls in the last five years alone.
The product safety commission has reported that injuries from these product defects have included loss of limbs, concussions and blood clots in the brain.
According to the Los Angeles Times, Dynacraft has been named in 11 product liability suits since 1990.
A current product liability civil suit has been filed against Dynacraft and Wal-Mart for an accident that occurred two years ago. Todd Hart, who was nine at the time, lost his left leg when the brakes on his bike allegedly failed and he was hit by a passing cargo van.
These bikes may only cost about $150, but the claims they can produce can cost thousands, maybe millions. One is faced with a tough decision when purchasing a bargain bike. On one hand the price can’t be beat, but on the other, is the money saved worth the risk?
The market is flooded with bikes represented by Dynacraft, so the odds are in your favor that a claim may be showing up at a desk near you this summer.
