Baca Trying to get a Handle on Lawless Claims By Robert Warne - February 21, 2002
Los Angeles Sheriff Lee Baca is up for re-election while at the same time his department is confronted with an $86 million workers’ compensation claims tab and a $25 million budget shortfall.
Abuse of the workers’ comp system within his department is reaching epidemic levels. There are reports that some deputies have received workers’ comp benefits after being put out of commission from off-duty activities. Some injuries are a result of skydiving, rodeo events and off-road racing.
On any given day 700 of 16,311 employees are off the job on workers’ comp claims. In the last six years the cost for workers’ comp for the department has climbed from $39 million to$86 million.
Baca’s solution is to hire someone who can work close to him and the department while reviewing the books.
