Next week Kemper Insurance will host it’s 35th consecutive PGA golf tournament. Kemper has been the single longest continuous sponsor on the PGA tour. The Kemper Insurance Open starts May 30 at the TPC at Avenel in Washington D.C., but practice rounds will start as early as Memorial Day.
Tiger Woods, a major draw to any event disappointed organizers today with his announcement that he plans to skip the Kemper Open this year. He said May 24 after finishing his round at the Memorial Open in Ohio that he needed two weeks to rest before the U.S. Open.
Pete Cleaves, Kemper chairman admitted to the media May 13, that ticket sales had surged on reports that Tiger might play in this year’s event. The news may not be what organizers wanted to hear, but for the players it clears one more obstacle standing in their way of a piece of the record $3.6 million dollar purse and a chance at the $650,000 top prize.
The Kemper Insurance Open began in North Carolina in 1968. It has been held in the Washington D.C. area since 1980. Kemper announced May 13 that is has signed an agreement with the PGA to host the Open at Avernel through 2006.
