Workers’ Comp Puts a Drag on Horse Racing By Robert Warne - February 28, 2002
California’s horse tracks are feeling the snap of the crop of workers’ compensation rate increases. Owners and trainers starting March 1 will only have one company willing to provide them coverage.
The California Horse Racing Board is preparing to approach the Insurance Commissioner for help.
Jockeys, traditionally considered independent contractors, must now be insured by their trainers on race day. The cost per race to insure a jockey is now $73, up from $29.
Trainers have threatened to not enter horses in upcoming races to draw attention to their plight which they see as a crisis.
