| | Umberg Undaunted by the Calderon—Garamendi Show By Robert Warne - March 1, 2002Democratic insurance commissioner candidate Tom Umberg is not wasting any of the final moments before the March 5 primary. The outcome of this election will determine which democratic candidate will go up against the republican candidate in the general election Nov. 5.
Umberg is in the process of carrying his integrity message statewide. As commissioner, Umberg plans to restore integrity to the Department of Insurance and fight for consumers. His four-day, nine-city trip has made stops in Santa Barbara, Bakersfield, Fresno, Chico, Redding, Eureka, Salinas, San Luis Obispo and Santa Maria. He will be campaigning in Southern California through the weekend.
Umberg recently garnished the support of one of the most recognized consumer activists in the nation, Erin Brockovich. She appears in his campaign commercials highlighting his commitment to consumers and public service as a federal prosecutor; a democratic assemblyman; an official in the Clinton White House; a husband and father of three; and a colonel in the Army Reserve. Umberg has pledged to refuse contributions from the insurance industry.
Brockovich said “Tom Umberg is the pro-consumer democrat for insurance commissioner.”
The Riverside Press Enterprise has hopped aboard also in support of Umberg. The Enterprise stated, “…We’d prefer the newer face, relatively speaking, and a newer approach to this office. Tom Umberg was a legislator, ran for attorney general, and then, too, went to Washington.
“His experience as deputy drug czar during the Clinton administration, coupled with a turn as federal prosecutor, is especially pertinent to the post he seeks: protection of insurance consumers requires these skills and attitudes.
“Tom Umberg—bright, articulate, persuasive; a lawyer and colonel in the Army Reserve—has specified a written code to guide him in office; beyond his own conduct, he’ll shape the conduct of others—the interests that he would regulate—to ensure that they obey the law…,” said the Enterprise.
The Bakersfield Californian has also endorsed Umberg. It stated March 1, “…The best opportunity we have to restore integrity, honesty and efficiency to the office is to select Tom Umberg, a former prosecutor and assemblyman, as the democrat nominee…
“…Assemblyman Tom Calderon of Montebello is raking in the industry dough—financing about 60 percent of his $2.4 million war chest with insurance contributions.
“Again we are reassured that he, like Quackenbush, ‘can’t be bought.’ And he justifies taking the cash by saying, ‘I don’t have rich friends’ like his two principle democrat opponents—Umberg and [John] Garamendi. (Yep, Garamendi wants the job back. But, he has been there, done that. It is time to move on to a new commissioner with new ideas and a pledge to reform the department.)…” said the Californian.
Don’t forget to vote Tuesday, March 5!
