Remembering Former Kemper chairman, CEO James S. Kemper, Jr.
By Robert Warne - July 8, 2002

Employees at Kemper Insurance Companies and many other civic and charitable organizations are reflecting on the life of James S. Kemper, Jr. today.

The former head of the Kemper Insurance Companies who transformed the mutual insurance company his father founded in 1912 into a major financial services complex, died yesterday at the age of 88.

After successfully overcoming his own alcoholism, he became a leader in the fight against alcohol abuse, creating a trend-setting employee assistance program at Kemper and serving on numerous organizations in the field, including the Presidential Commission on Drunk Driving and its successor organization, the National Commission Against Drunk Driving.

Mr. Kemper joined the Kemper organization in 1960. He was named chairman and chief executive officer in 1969 and remained in that position until his retirement in 1979. He served as chairman of the board of the major entities of the Kemper organization—the Kemper Insurance Companies and Kemper Corporation—until 1986.

During Mr. Kemper's watch, the Kemper organization expanded in both the insurance and financial services marketplaces. Besides its traditional property-casualty offerings, Kemper became a leader in low-cost term life insurance. The company also moved into reinsurance by forming the Kemper Reinsurance Company in 1969 and established itself in the financial services/securities arena with the formation of Kemper Financial Services in 1970.

Kemper also adopted a strategy of expansion through the acquisition of several regional property-casualty insurance companies, primarily in the Midwest and on the West Coast.

In 1967, Mr. Kemper was instrumental in the formation of the publicly held Kemper Corporation, a holding company designed to provide flexibility in diversification. Kemper Corporation was sold to Zurich Insurance Group in 1996.

Following his retirement as chairman of the board, Mr. Kemper served as a corporate consultant to Kemper on public policy matters and external affairs. He also remained chairman of the board of Kemper Sports Management, Inc. The privately owned firm manages the Kemper Lakes Golf Course, a public facility adjacent to Kemper's Long Grove, Ill., headquarters.

The organization also manages the Kemper Insurance Open, the PGA TOUR golf tournament sponsored by Kemper and held annually near Washington, D.C. It is one of the largest companies in the golf industry, managing 80 golf courses and organizing many golf events and other sports marketing activities.

Mr. Kemper was honorary chairman of the James S. Kemper Foundation, a private foundation funded by Kemper companies and named in honor of his father, the late Ambassador James S. Kemper, Sr.

In addition to his business interests, Mr. Kemper was very active in civic and charitable work. His two great civic passions were the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, which honored him with the Herbert Hoover award, and the Betty Ford Center in Rancho Mirage, Calif., where he served as a director.

Mr. Kemper was nationally known for his work in the field of alcoholism. President Carter appointed him to the National Commission on Alcoholism and Other Related Problems. President Reagan named him to the Presidential Commission on Drunk Driving, and he was chairman of the board of trustees of its successor committee, the National Commission Against Drunk Driving. He served as a member of the Department of Health, Education and Welfare's Interagency Committee on Federal Activities for Alcohol and Alcoholism. He was also a director of the National Council on Alcoholism.

During Mr. Kemper's tenure, the Kemper organization pioneered the concept of an employee alcoholism rehabilitation program. Kemper's program today deals with a variety of "living" problems. It was considered a model for corporate programs and has been widely discussed in the media and literature in the field. In recognition of his work in the field of alcoholism and drunk driving, in 1990 Mr. Kemper was awarded the Order of Lincoln, Illinois' highest honor.

Kemper was one of the early companies to issue a corporate code of ethics. When it did in 1975, Mr. Kemper publicly urged the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the National Association of Manufacturers to adopt ethical codes and to develop enforcement procedures.

Mr. Kemper has received many awards in recognition of his efforts. Among them are the Gold Key from the National Council on Alcoholism, the Silver Plaque from the National Conference on Christians and Jews and numerous other civic, charitable and educational awards.

Mr. Kemper was a director or trustee of the following: Boys and Girls Clubs of America, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Illinois Institute of Technology, Museum of Science and Industry and the Eisenhower Medical Center.

Long active in Republican Party affairs, Mr. Kemper was a delegate to several GOP national conventions. He continually encouraged the business community to be more active in political and government affairs. Mr. Kemper was often in Washington discussing public policy issues facing the insurance industry.

He was also an avid golfer and deeply interested in the sport. Largely as a result of his interest, the Kemper organization used golf as a promotional vehicle, sponsoring the Kemper Insurance Open since 1968 and the former Women's Kemper Open on the LPGA Tour. Mr. Kemper was elected to the advisory board of the Professional Golfers' Association (PGA). He was also an honorary member of the PGA of Illinois and chairman of the 1989 PGA Championship, which was held at Kemper Lakes Golf Course.

In World War II, Mr. Kemper served as an intelligence officer in a naval aviation unit in the Pacific theater.

Mr. Kemper received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Yale University. He received his juris doctorate from Harvard University. Before joining the company, he had law practices in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles.

He was born in Chicago on April 8, 1914 and most recently resided in Golf, Ill., and at a vacation home in Pauma Valley, Calif. He is survived by his wife, Joan; his children, James S. III, Linda Fair, Stephen, Judith Lewis, Robert, Christina Gidwitz, Dr. Terry Fotre and Jan Fotre; eleven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 23, 2002, at the Fourth Presbyterian Church, 126 East Chestnut Street, Chicago, Ill. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Betty Ford Center, Rancho Mirage, Calif., or to the Boys & Girls Clubs of America.

The Kemper Insurance Companies is a leading provider of property/casualty insurance and risk management services with 2001 revenues totaling $5.9 billion and assets of $8.9 billion. Headquartered in Long Grove, Ill., Kemper operates nationwide and in many foreign markets.
