Breaking the Hand That Feeds You
A 24-year-old Coachella man faces up to five years in prison for workers’ compensation fraud and insurance fraud. Michael Garza was arrested at his home Jan. 9 by investigators from the Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigation Branch’s Fraud Division. Investigators discovered that Garza had applied for workers’ compensation benefits from Zenith Insurance for a broken hand he claimed to have suffered in a work-related vehicle accident. The investigation showed that Garza actually broke his hand two weeks before he claimed and the accident was not work-related. Zenith Insurance paid nearly $29,000 to Garza and AAA Interinsurance Exchange paid approximately $8,000.
