Wes Bannister Wins Endorsement of Two Major Latino Associations in Insurance Commissioner Race By Robert Warne - February 28, 2002HUNTINGTON BEACH – GOP Insurance Commissioner candidate Wes Bannister today announced his formal endorsement by two powerful Hispanic
insurance associations. Bannister called the endorsements of the Latin American Agents Association and the Independent
Broker Network (IBN) especially important as they represent thousands of community-based agents and brokers.
“They represent the hardworking community insurance professionals, not the slick Insurance Company lobbyists and powerbrokers,”
Bannister said. Bannister has refused
to accept contributions from Insurance Companies, but welcomes support from these agent and broker groups that represent consumers in the Latino community.
The two largest Hispanic insurance organizations called Bannister “fair and willing to have broad representation of community and
industry leaders on the same table while he is in office to help him manage this state’s insurance issues.”
In a letter jointly signed by LAAA‘s Andre Urena and IBN’s Fred “Sonny” Di Meo, both organizations endorsed Bannister for the Republican nomination.
The two groups join the American Agents Alliance (AAA), in endorsing Wes Bannister for Insurance Commissioner. AAA called him “the clear choice among the Republican candidates
for Insurance Commissioner.” The group also issued a warning that “voting for the wrong candidate could very well result in higher insurance premiums for California consumers.”
AAA said, “He will vigorously fight to keep insurance premiums affordable and to protect the rights of consumers. Bannister has been a broker-agent in California for over 30 years and clearly understands what steps the California Department of Insurance needs to take in order to protect consumers.”
Bannister, one of three candidates for the Republican nomination for Insurance Commissioner, was the GOP’s 1990 nominee, losing by a small margin to Democrat John Garamendi. “California faces a serious insurance crisis. The state is already reeling from insolvencies of a number of workers’ compensation carriers and a shortage of available lines of insurance. Consumers, already reeling
from higher costs and less availability, will face even more hardships if the insurance department does not act quickly,” Bannister said.
He has also campaigned against electing career politicians as Insurance Commissioner and called the conduct of the previous two elected
commissioners, “totally disgraceful.”
“Electing ambitious politicians has made the Insurance Commissioner’s office into a quagmire of scandals. I will stop the shameful
antics and provide experienced leadership to solve, not create, problems,” Bannister said.
