Tragic Events Shatter a Host of Dreams
By John Millrany - April 5, 2008

April 5th 2001 -The lure of snow and the warmth of tight friendships are but two elements of tragic events that led to the deaths of 18 persons in the crash of a charter jet March 29 in Aspen, CO. A close friend of Jose Aguilar has told adjustercom that, because of a premonition, Jose should not have been on that flight.

Jose, an adjuster who was employed by Fremont Compensation Insurance Company's Glendale, CA office, was an avid snowboarder and an innermost pal among the group that were off to the ski resort to celebrate Jose’s brother Mario’s 26th birthday at a friend’s Aspen estate.

Also killed in the adverse-weather-related crash—which, according to updated FAA flight provisos was an unnecessary event in itself—were Jose’s brothers Joey and Mario, their mother Maria Valanzuela, an aunt, Romana Cota, and Jose’s girlfriend Elena Bernal, who was also an adjuster.

A Mass for Jose, Joey, Mario, and their mother will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, April 6 at St. Bede Catholic Church, 26950 Patrick Ave., Hayward, CA. The Mass will be concelebrated by Fathers Filiberto Barrera and Seamus Farrell.

Jose "Joe" Aguilar was a mostly quiet, introspective, popular—but often fun-loving—figure in Los Angeles area insurance circles. Comments from acquaintances of Jose’s during the last several years range from, "He’s a very nice guy, clean-cut, a very caring person" and "Everyone just loved him."

The tight relationship Jose had with friend Isacc was indeed something special. Virtually joined at the hip, the two amigos were planning to visit a tattoo parlor just before the doomed flight. Their selection of choice for their skin adornment: a dragon each. But the joint session didn’t happen.

Friends for 15 years, Jose and Isacc would play hooky at times, just to hit the snow slopes in Big Bear. Jose would call in sick at Fremont and off they’d go.

The plan for the Aspen trip was to have involved Isacc, but something—divinely ordained?—intervened. Isacc knew about the trip, but when Jose and Elena (who planned to get married later this year) came to Isacc’s house for dinner two days before the flight, Jose said nothing about the celebratory sojourn.

After dinner, Isacc said "I started having this funny feeling, a kind of ‘doom’ feeling, and I tried calling him all through the day. On Wednesday (the day before the chartered flight out of Los Angeles International), I said, ‘Jose, there’s something wrong. I can’t pinpoint it, and I don’t know if it has something to do with you.’

"‘There’s nothing wrong; you’re acting crazy,’ he told me. ‘I’m going, so just don’t worry about it.’"

Isacc said they even argued about the issue and Jose left Isacc in a huff. "I left him a message saying I was really sorry; I just felt that there was something wrong. But he didn’t return any of my calls."

On the day of the crash, Isacc had repaired to the tattoo shop. He heard the news just as the finishing touches on his dragon tattoo was being applied.

Denial set in as Isacc flashed on many experiences the two had shared.

"Not too long ago, Jose called in sick and off we went to Big Bear. On the ski lift I said, ‘Hey, let’s jump off and climb to the top of the mountain.’ He said NO WAY at first but then we jumped down and started climbing.

"When we got to the top I said, ‘All you can see from here are the tops of trees, snow all over and blue skies. This is Heaven.’"

During their deep talks, Jose told Isacc, "My name means Jesus on Earth" and "I’m your guardian angel, sent from God to protect you."

"Jose loved God so much. He used to tell me that he talked to God and had a relationship with God."

As debris rained down from the crashing Gulfstream III turbojet just short of the Aspen runway, a tragic story took on a form that could have been scripted out of Hollywood. Others who perished included Ori Greenberg, a 23-year-old, award-winning filmmaker; his girlfriend Elizabeth Ann Smith, who had moved from Seattle to Hollywood; Robert Neu, a financier and friend of the 15 party-goers; assignment editor Mirweis "Mir" Tukhi and production assistant Marissa Witham, both of KTTV News; other friends Eugene Kaplansky, Ivan Garcia, Danielle Bacon, Paul Stanifer; and the crew members, Bob Frisbie, pilot, Peter Kowalczyk, co-pilot, and Catherine Naranjo, attendant.
