A shot has been fired over the bow of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department warning employees that fraudulent workers’ compensation claims won’t be tolerated.

Out on $30,000 bail, 36-year-old Deputy Robert Justin was charged Oct. 24 with six felony counts for filing a false workers’ compensation claim. Five of the counts were for insurance fraud and one was for grand theft, which all together may put Justin on the other side of the bars than he’s used to for five years.

Tom Higgins, head deputy of the district attorney’s workers’ compensation fraud unit told the Los Angeles Times that this was the first time that he can recall the DA charging a sheriff for workers’ compensation fraud.

Authorities recall that in 1990, a deputy who collected on a permanent disability pension was busted for displaying his true physical capabilities as a Chippendales exotic dancer. He was charged with attempted grand theft and put on probation and ordered to do 200 hours of community service.

Higgins said, "I think this arrest is very important for Los Angeles County and specifically the Sheriff's Department. It shows vigor to pursue these cases that was not there before," according to the Times.

The claim in question involved two deputies crashing their personal cars into each other. Justin, who was driving one of the vehicles claims he was injured in the wreck.

The sheriff’s department initiated the investigation and has witnesses who were at the scene of the accident and witnesses who were at a football game where they say the injury actually occurred.
