A suit seeking $20 million from Swiss Reinsurance America Corp. to settle workers’ compensation claims against the old Los Angeles based Times Mirror Co. was filed July 3, in the seventh circuit federal court in Chicago.
Editor and Publisher reported that, Times Mirror agreed to pay more than $65 million to Reliance National Indemnity Co. before Tribune Co. took over the media chain in 2000. The money was to administer and settle workers’ compensation claims dating back to 1977.
When Reliance was liquidated in October 2001 it left Tribune with obligations “in excess of $20 million,” as stated in the suit.
The lawsuit alleges Reliance “acted merely as a ‘front’ or ‘pass-through’” for Swiss Re, who hasn’t paid the claims.
A preliminary status hearing is scheduled for Sept. 20.
