Lockheed Martin to Settle Over CA Skunk Works Contamination By Michelle Logsdon - March 6, 2002
Lockheed Martin Corp. has settled a federal lawsuit brought by 40 Burbank residents who claimed that environmental contamination by the company’s old Skunk Works plant made them sick and caused property damage.
Gail Rymer, Lockheed spokeswoman, said the settlement terms should be finalized in the next couple of weeks but she declined to give details about the agreement.
These 40 claims are the last to be resolved from a list of over 3,000 Burbank residents who sued the company alleging it poisoned local groundwater by improperly disposing of chemicals for approximately 50 years. They claimed the water caused their various illnesses including breast cancer, leukemia and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
Of the 40 claims, three cited personal-injury, one cited wrongful death and one cited negligence. The remaining claims included in the settlement were previously thrown out of court with appeal rights.
