Mark Montgomery, M.D., A Hand Surgeon Who Operated On Workers' Compensation Patients, Dies In The Montecito Mudslide
By Lonce Lamonte - January 15, 2018

Mark Truslow Montgomery, M.D., a well-known and well-liked hand surgeon who regularly performed hand surgery on workers’ compensation patients, was killed in the powerful and horrific mud slide that struck his home in Montecito, California, on Tuesday, January 9th.

Mark was utilized as an AME in Oxnard, Ventura, and Santa Barbara.

He was a long time Montecito resident.  His medical office was in Santa Barbara.   According to the L.A. Times, the office had three doctors in an intimate atmosphere.

Mark was 54 years old.

His daughter, Caroline, was also killed while in the house from the impact of the mudslide.  According to one report, Dr. Montgomery and Caroline were downstairs when the impact occurred, while his son was upstairs.  The son only sustained minor cuts and bruises.  According to a news station, KSBY, Caroline drowned in her brother’s arms.

Mud crashed through the walls and windows. Dr. Montgomery was buried alive. Search and rescue members, using an arsenal of tools, technology and specially trained dogs, probed through piles of debris more than 15 feet deep and found the body of Dr. Montgomery.

According to the L.A. Times report from Friday, January 12th, Mark Montgomery’s wife and eldest daughter were traveling when the mudslide happened and were therefore away when the disaster struck.

Mark Montgomery was a member of the Santa Barbara College Hospital Medical staff.  He graduated from Princeton University and Columbia Medical School. Caroline Montgomery, age 22, graduated from the Cate School in Carpinteria.  She was studying psychology and was a senior at Bernard College in New York.

Today the death toll from the Montecito mudslide hit 20.  Many areas are still without electricity and gas service.  Some residents have been denied access to their homes as crews are working to clear roads and restore services.  Some residents are stuck at their homes and cannot get out to restock on food and water.

The 101 freeway remains closed.

As everyone in Southern California now knows, the Thomas fire ravaged Santa Barbara County last month. The Thomas fire was the largest in California history yet it spared the town of Montecito; however, it burned away vegetation in the surrounding hillside and cooked out the organic matter in the soil which helps the earth to absorb water when it rains.

Then early on January 9, 2017, torrential rain struck the area, three to five inches, which caused flash flooding in the Santa Ynez Mountains. The flooding caused mud, rock and debris to slide down from wildfire-charred hillsides and reached the Montecito community below. While dams or other similar structures might catch some of the sediment, these structures aren’t  much use for a mudslide of this size. The death toll at 20 is likely to rise as the search and rescue operation transitioned, on Sunday, to search and recovery.

"This decision was not made lightly," said Santa Barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown. Two thousand first responders remain on the scene. Hope, while still a possibility, has dwindled on finding more survivors in the muck.  Several people remain unaccounted for. The dead are from all age groups with the  youngest victim, 3-year-old Kailly Benitez, to the oldest, 89-year-old Jim Mitchell. At least 73 homes were destroyed and 61 others were damaged.

Dr. Mark Montgomery was beloved by applicant attorneys and insurance companies alike. He called them as he saw them and spoke the truth. His business associate, Dr. Michael Behrman, said he was a “great doctor and a great friend."

Following his residency training in Orthopedic Surgery at the New York Orthopaedic Hospital, Dr. Montgomery went to Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York City.  He completed a fellowship in hand and upper extremity surgery at Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Montgomery was certified in advanced microsurgery. He was board certified in Orthopedic Surgery, had a Certificate of Added Qualification in Hand Surgery, and was a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and the American Society for Surgery of the Hand.

He was appointed Chief Resident in Orthopedic Surgery while at Columbia. He was a clinical instructor in the department of Orthopedic Surgery at Harvard Medical School. He worked at Boston Children's Hospital, one of the nation's premier pediatric referral centers, and at Brigham and Women's Hospital, which is renowned in the treatment of arthritis.

Dr. Mark Truslow Montgomery you will be missed! Our thoughts and prayers are with Dr. Montgomery’s family as well as the other victims of the Thomas Fire and Montecito mudslide.
