| | Aifeng Su, Los Altos Acupuncturist, Charged With Insurance Fraud By Lonce LaMon - July 4, 2017
Aifeng Su, a Los Altos, California, acupuncturist, has been charged with two felony counts of making false or fraudulent claims for patients’ medical insurance. He is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday, July 5th 2017. If convicted, he could be sentenced to up to six years in state prison.
The 53-year-old Su received approximately $12,000 for more than sixty “phantom treatments”, according to the Santa Clara District Attorney’s office. The California Department of Insurance received information in 2014 that Aifeng Su had billed insurance carriers for visits that never happened, according to the prosecutors. Two patients, a husband and a wife, later discovered that Su had allegedly billed for treatments that never occurred.
Prosecutors allege another patient caught Su billing for visits that never were. The acupuncturist reimbursed the payments when the patient confronted him.
Deputy District Attorney, Vonda Tracey, said, “A patient’s vigilance is a major factor in detecting this type of fraud.”
Anyone with information about the case is being asked by the Santa Clara DA’s office to call Vonda Tracey at 408 792-2580.
