Keenan & Associates, based in Torrance, California, was purchased today by AssuredPartners, Inc. a Florida-based insurance brokerage. The announcement was published in Business Insurance Magazine with the information that the terms of the purchase were not disclosed.
According to Business Insurance, the acquisition should close in late March or early April 2017.
Keenan was started in 1972 by John Keenan. It began as a brokerage and grew to add the services of a third-party administrator handling workers’ compensation, liability and property claims. Keenan added employee benefits and financial services, thus, embracing a wide spectrum of insurance services.
Keenan & Associates specialized early on and continued to specialize over the years in school districts. It also focused on public entities. But, eventually it grew to handle private sector claims but kept a deep stronghold in schools and government agencies.
Many workers’ compensation claims professionals have been raised and seasoned at Keenan and then have moved on to excel in other claims departments as well as start other third-party administrators. Dale Jones was mentored at Keenan & Associates in his early career, and then became a founder plus the President of SCRMA (Southern California Risk Management Associates), which was based in Upland. More than a decade ago, SCRMA was sold to York Insurance Services Group.
Sandra Gutierrez also worked at Keenan in her early career. Today Sandra is the owner and Director of the third-party-administrator California Claims Management Services, also based in Torrance, California.
As well, seasoned claims professionals have come to Keenan. Stacey Golden, now an Assistant Vice President, has been with Keenan & Associates for fifteen years. She had a prior background which included Royal and Sunalliance.
Stacey Golden in 2014.
Bernard Colen, who was a partner for over twenty years since about 1980 in the third-party-administrator Colen & Lee, made the transition after the turn of the 21st Century to Senior Vice President at Keenan & Associates. John Keenan, just two or three years before his death in 2014, mentioned to this writer that he was impressed and proud of Bernie Colen, and quite happy to now have him at his company.
John Keenan lived well into his eighties and was an avid tennis player as an octogenarian. He would answer his cell phone at the tennis courts.
Keenan & Associates also has a claims office in Riverside, California.
